Introduction

The introductory climasus4r tutorials present each function individually, focusing on learning each pipeline step in isolation. In this case studies section, the goal is different: to show how the functions combine into complete pipelines, executable and oriented toward real scientific problems.

Each case study integrates DATASUS data with INMET climate data, producing an analytical base ready for statistical modeling. The four cases cover the systems most widely used in Brazilian environmental epidemiology (SIM-DO, SINAN, SIH), different geographic regions, and different temporal and climate aggregation strategies.

The pipelines are presented with complete code, step-by-step explanation, and a description of the expected output. The ultimate goal is for the reader to be able to adapt any of them to their own research context, changing states, years, disease groups, and climate integration strategies.

All chunks have eval=FALSE: no analysis is executed while rendering this document. The case studies are reference guides — not computed outputs.

Overview of the case studies

Case Study System Region Period Focus
1. Pediatric Respiratory SIM-DO SP, RJ, MG 2018–2022 ARI < 5 years + temperature
2. Dengue and Climate SINAN-DENGUE CE, PE, BA, MA 2015–2022 Precipitation + incidence
3. Cardiovascular and Heat SIM-DO SP 2016–2023 Older adults 65+ + heatwaves
